RV OWNER’S FIELD GUIDE
Van Build & Skoolie Electrical Troubleshooting
DIY conversions have the widest range of electrical problems we see — because every build is different. Here’s how to think through a fault when there’s no factory wiring diagram to fall back on.
Why Custom Builds Fail Differently
Factory RVs follow a manufacturer’s wiring diagram and standardized components. Van builds and skoolie conversions are one-off systems, often assembled from parts sourced from several different brands and installed by several different people over time — sometimes including the owner. That means troubleshooting starts with documentation, not a multimeter.
— No as-built wiring diagram — the single biggest factor that turns a 30-minute fix into a multi-hour diagnosis
— Mixed-brand components (solar, inverter, converter, BMS) that were never designed to communicate with each other
— Undersized wire gauge or fusing for the actual load, often from following a generic online guide instead of calculating the build’s real draw
— DIY crimped or soldered connections that loosen or corrode faster than factory terminals
Common Symptoms & What They Usually Mean
— Intermittent power loss under vibration/driving: a loose crimp or connector, not a component failure — check every connection along the affected circuit
— A breaker or fuse that trips only under specific loads: undersized wire or fuse rating for that circuit’s actual draw
— Components that won’t “talk” to each other (app won’t connect, no shared display data): incompatible communication protocols between brands, not a wiring fault
— Voltage drop across long cable runs (common in skoolies and larger builds): undersized gauge for the run length, not just the amperage
Before You Start Troubleshooting
If there’s no wiring diagram, make one — even a rough sketch of every component, fuse, and connection point saves enormous time on every future issue. Label circuits at the panel. Note wire gauge and fuse ratings as you find them. This single step is the difference between a 20-minute fix and tearing into walls guessing.
When to Stop and Call a Professional
Mixed-brand systems with no documentation, repeated intermittent faults that resist basic checks, or any build where you’re not fully confident in the existing wiring are worth a professional once-over — especially before a long trip. We regularly document undocumented builds as part of the diagnosis, so future issues are fixed in minutes instead of hours.
