What Actually Goes Wrong at a Pedestal
Campground pedestal wiring varies wildly in age and quality. The two real threats are low/high voltage (an overloaded park circuit sagging under 108V, or occasionally spiking high) and open ground or reversed polarity, which is a shock hazard, not just an equipment risk. Neither trips a normal breaker — your rig’s AC, converter, and electronics just quietly take the damage.
Surge Protector vs. EMS — the Real Difference
A basic surge protector clamps a voltage spike. An EMS (Energy Management System) goes further — it continuously monitors voltage and disconnects the whole rig automatically if voltage goes outside a safe range, and checks wiring for open ground/reversed polarity before ever connecting. For full-time or frequent travelers, the EMS is worth the extra cost over a surge-only unit.
Portable vs. Hardwired
A portable unit at the pedestal is easy to check at a glance and doesn’t require install labor, but it’s exposed to weather and easier to have stolen. A hardwired unit inside the rig is out of sight and out of the weather, but needs a proper install behind the panel — the kind of job worth having done alongside any other electrical work rather than as a standalone visit.
