30-Amp vs. 50-Amp Shore Power

50-amp service isn’t “more current on one wire” — it’s a fundamentally different hookup. Here’s what that means for what you can actually run.

The Actual Difference

A 30-amp shore connection is a single 120V leg — roughly 3,600 watts total available. A 50-amp connection is two separate 120V legs (100 amps total across both) — roughly 12,000 watts available, more than triple. That’s why a 30-to-50 or 50-to-30 dogbone adapter doesn’t turn a 30-amp pedestal into 50-amp power; it just lets the plug fit. The actual amperage available is still whatever the pedestal or your rig’s wiring is rated for.

Why 30-Amp Rigs Trip Breakers Running Two ACs

On 30-amp service, running the AC, microwave, and water heater element at the same time is often enough to trip the pedestal breaker — there simply isn’t enough total wattage available. This isn’t a malfunction; it’s the math. Managing load (running things sequentially rather than simultaneously) is the normal way to live on 30-amp service.
