Best LiFePO4 Batteries for RVs: A Certified Installer’s Buying Guide

Why LiFePO4 Beats Lead-Acid and AGM
If you’re still running lead-acid or AGM, you’re carrying dead weight and losing usable power you paid for. The numbers below are industry-standard specs, not brand marketing:
Usable capacity: AGM should stay above 50% state of charge to protect its lifespan. LiFePO4 can be run down to 80-100% depth of discharge regularly without damage — so a 100Ah LiFePO4 battery delivers close to double the real-world usable power of a 100Ah AGM.
Cycle life: AGM typically holds up for 300-500 cycles before it’s degraded. Quality LiFePO4 batteries are commonly rated 3,000-6,000+ cycles — a realistic 6-10x lifespan difference in daily-use conditions.
Weight: LiFePO4 typically runs 50-65% lighter than an equivalent AGM. On a trailer or tow vehicle, that’s real payload back.
Charging speed: LiFePO4 accepts a much higher charge current safely — shorter generator runtime, faster solar recovery.
What Actually Matters When You’re Buying
Most buying guides just repeat spec sheets. Here’s what actually gets checked before a battery goes on a customer’s rig:
1. BMS Quality
The Battery Management System protects the cells from overcharge, over-discharge, and thermal faults. A weak or poorly-tuned BMS is the #1 cause of premature lithium failure. Look for documented protections — over-voltage, over-current, over-temperature, short-circuit — not just a BMS logo on the box.
2. Low-Temperature Protection
Standard LiFePO4 cells should not be charged below freezing — it causes permanent internal cell damage even if the battery keeps working afterward. If you camp in cold weather, self-heating isn’t a nice-to-have, it’s the difference between a battery that lasts and one that quietly loses capacity all winter. Look for a battery that auto-activates heating in the low-40s°F and cuts off charging at 32°F, not one that just claims “cold weather ready.”
3. Group Size & Physical Fit
Group 24, 27, 31, or 4D/8D — measure your actual compartment before you order. We’ve had customers order the right capacity in the wrong case size and it simply doesn’t seat or terminal-out correctly.
4. Communication / System Integration
If you run Victron gear, look for real CAN-bus communication to your Cerbo GX, not just a Bluetooth app. That gets you an actual state-of-charge from the battery’s own BMS instead of a voltage-based guess. One caveat worth knowing: most CAN-bus lithium batteries (Epoch included) only support a single battery reporting over CAN at a time — you can parallel multiple batteries for power, but only one talks to the Cerbo for monitoring. That’s a system design detail, not a dealbreaker, but it changes how you should wire a multi-battery bank.
5. Real Warranty Terms
Read the actual warranty document, not the years printed on the box. Check what voids it — deep-discharge damage and cold-weather charging damage are the two most commonly excluded.

There’s no single “best” battery — the right one depends on your rig, your budget, and how you actually use it.
