GVWR, GCWR & Payload Explained

GVWR, GCWR, CCC, UVW — the sticker inside your door frame is covered in acronyms that most owners never learn to read. Get them wrong and you’re not just risking a fine, you’re risking tires, axles, brakes, and the suspension components that keep the rig on the road.

What each rating actually measures

GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) is the maximum your RV or trailer can weigh, fully loaded — cargo, water, propane, people, and gear included. It’s set by the manufacturer based on the axles, frame, and tires actually installed, not on what you wish you could carry.

GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating) covers the tow vehicle and trailer together, fully loaded. This is the number most owners skip, and it’s the one that catches people towing a trailer that’s individually within its own GVWR but still overloads the tow vehicle’s drivetrain and brakes as a combination.

Payload / CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity) is GVWR minus the RV’s actual empty weight (UVW) minus any options — the real number of pounds you have left for water, propane, batteries, gear, and people. On many trailers this is smaller than owners expect once a full water tank and a loaded cargo bay are accounted for.

Where overloading actually shows up

An overloaded rig rarely fails dramatically on day one. It shows up as premature tire wear and blowouts, sagging or bottomed-out suspension, brake fade on grades, and a tow vehicle transmission running hotter than it should. Axle and hitch failures on overloaded trailers are common enough that we treat a weight check as a standard part of any pre-trip inspection.

The only way to know your actual loaded weight — not the sticker number, your real number with your gear in it — is to get on a scale. See our CAT scale weighing guide for the step-by-step process.
