Weight Distribution Hitch Setup Guide
A weight distribution hitch that’s installed but not adjusted correctly gives you none of the stability it promises. Setup is a measured process, not a bolt-it-on-and-go job.
What it’s actually doing
A trailer’s tongue weight pushes down on the tow vehicle’s rear axle, lifting weight off the front steer axle. That’s what causes headlight glare, vague steering, and reduced front brake bite. Spring bars on a weight distribution hitch leverage that tongue weight back across all axles on both vehicles, restoring a level ride height and even weight distribution.
Sway control is a separate function, sometimes built into the same hitch, sometimes a standalone friction or dual-cam unit. Weight distribution reduces the conditions that cause sway; it doesn’t eliminate sway on its own.
Getting the adjustment right
Correct setup means measuring ride height at all four corners before and after hitching, then adjusting spring bar tension until the tow vehicle returns close to its unloaded height. Too little tension leaves the front axle light; too much over-corrects and can lift weight off the trailer axle instead.
Every hitch/trailer/tow vehicle combination is different, which is why a shop check after initial setup — and after any change in trailer loading — catches problems a driveway install misses. Confirm actual axle weights with the CAT scale process once the hitch is set.
