RV OWNER’S FIELD GUIDE · SEASONAL, TRAVEL & MICHIGAN-SPECIFIC
Driving Michigan’s U.P. & Winter Roads Guide
The Upper Peninsula is one of the most scenic RV drives in the Midwest, and one of the most remote, with lake-effect snow patterns and long stretches between services that catch travelers off guard.
Lake-effect snow and shoulder-season timing
Lake-effect snow off Lake Superior can produce intense, localized snowfall that’s hard to predict from a general regional forecast — conditions can change dramatically within a short drive, especially near the shoreline versus inland. Shoulder-season travel (early spring, late fall) carries real risk of an unexpected snow event even when the calendar says it should be clear.
Check road-specific conditions, not just a general weather app, before committing to a U.P. crossing during shoulder months.
Remote stretches and rig prep
Services thin out considerably between the larger U.P. towns — fuel up and don’t let tank levels run low between known stops. Cell coverage gets patchy in stretches, which is where a booster (see our weBoost install guide) or satellite connectivity genuinely earns its keep.
Cold-weather rig prep matters here more than on most RV trips — check underbelly insulation (see our underbelly insulation guide) and confirm your emergency roadside kit is stocked for genuinely cold conditions, not just a generic warm-weather kit.
