A cell booster doesn’t create signal out of nothing — it amplifies whatever weak signal is already reaching your roof antenna. Install it wrong and you can end up with worse performance than no booster at all.

The three components

A booster system has three parts: an outdoor (donor) antenna that captures the weak cell signal, an amplifier unit that boosts it, and an indoor antenna that rebroadcasts the boosted signal inside the rig. All three need to be correctly matched and positioned for the system to perform anywhere near its rated specs.

Roof-mount donor antennas generally outperform window-mount options since they sit above the RV body and get a clearer line of sight to distant cell towers — relevant on the more remote legs of a travel route.

Avoiding oscillation feedback

If the outdoor and indoor antennas are placed too close together, the amplifier can pick up its own output and re-amplify it — oscillation feedback — which the system detects and responds to by reducing gain automatically, killing performance. Manufacturer specs list a minimum vertical separation between antennas; on an RV roof that’s tighter real estate than a house, so placement has to be planned, not guessed.

This pairs naturally with a Starlink setup for redundant connectivity — cellular boosted where towers exist, satellite where they don’t.
