Holding Tank Sensor Troubleshooting

“My black tank always reads full” is one of the most common complaints in any RV, and it’s rarely the sensor’s electronics that are actually broken.

Why Sensors Read Wrong So Often

Most factory sensors are simple probes mounted flush with the tank wall. Solid waste and toilet paper stick to them and coat the probe, which reads as “full” even in a mostly empty tank. This is a physical fouling problem, not usually an electronics failure.

What Actually Clears Fouled Sensors

Adequate flush water with every use (a common mistake is using too little water per flush), a tank rinser/flush wand run after dumping, and adding enough water before travel to let waste actually agitate against the tank walls all help keep sensors reading accurately. Chemical tank treatments help but don’t replace mechanical cleaning.

When It’s an Actual Electronics Fault

If sensors read empty on a known-full tank, or the panel shows the same reading on every level regardless of actual tank state, that’s more likely a genuine wiring or monitor panel fault rather than fouling — worth having diagnosed rather than continuing to guess.
