Pre-Purchase RV Inspection (PPI) Guide

RV OWNER’S FIELD GUIDE

What a Pre-Purchase Inspection Actually Catches

Buying an RV, new or used, without an independent inspection is the single most expensive mistake we see. Here’s what a proper PPI covers and why it matters before you sign.

Why an Independent PPI Matters

A seller’s walkthrough and a dealer’s “multi-point inspection” are not the same as an independent, third-party technician checking the unit with no financial interest in the sale. The most expensive RV problems β€” water damage, electrical faults, chassis issues β€” are exactly the ones that don’t show up on a casual walkthrough.

What Gets Checked

β€”  Roof, seams, and seals β€” moisture meter readings at every penetration and seam, not just a visual look
β€”  Water damage indicators inside β€” soft flooring, delaminating cabinets, musty odor, moisture readings behind panels
β€”  Electrical system β€” shore power, converter/inverter operation, battery condition, and full function test of every circuit
β€”  Plumbing system β€” pressure test, water heater operation, tank and valve condition
β€”  Propane system β€” leak-down test, regulator condition, appliance function
β€”  Generator β€” start-up, load test, and exhaust/carbon monoxide check
β€”  Appliances β€” furnace, AC, refrigerator, and slide-out operation under real conditions, not just “it turns on”
β€”  Chassis and running gear (drivable units) β€” tires, brakes, suspension, and undercarriage condition

The Most Common Costly Finds

β€”  Water intrusion already active in the roof, floor, or slide-out seals, invisible without a moisture meter
β€”  A converter or inverter that’s failing under load but works fine at idle
β€”  A generator that starts but won’t hold a load β€” impossible to catch without an actual load test
β€”  Undisclosed prior repairs or modifications that don’t meet code

Timing It Right

Schedule the inspection before final funds change hands, ideally with a contingency in the purchase agreement. A PPI that happens after you’ve already paid gives you information, but no leverage.
