Norcold Refrigerator Troubleshooting
Norcold’s absorption fridges fail differently than Dometic’s — different codes, different common causes. Here’s what to check before calling it a lost cause.
Not Cooling on Any Mode
If it won’t cool on gas, 12V, or 120V alike, the problem is almost never the mode-specific heat source — it’s the cooling unit or the fridge simply isn’t level. Absorption fridges rely on gravity-fed ammonia flow and can lose cooling ability if the rig is parked off-level for extended periods. Check level first; it’s free.
Yellow Sediment or a “Boiled” Smell
A yellowish powder residue near the cooling unit, or an ammonia/rotten-egg smell, indicates the cooling unit has failed internally — this is not a repairable fault, only a replacement fixes it. Continuing to run a fridge in this state is a real fire risk; older Norcold units were the subject of a manufacturer recall specifically for this failure mode. Shut it down and have it inspected.
Runs on Shore Power but Not on Gas
This isolates the fault to the gas side — check LP supply pressure first (see our LP gas pressure guide), then the igniter/electrode and thermocouple. A fridge that lights briefly then shuts off usually means a weak thermocouple signal, not a gas supply problem.
