Dometic AC, Fridge & Awning Troubleshooting Guide
Dometic runs more RV rooftop AC units, fridges, and awnings on the road than any other brand. Here’s the real fault reference for the three systems that generate the most service calls.
Rooftop AC: Penguin & Brisk II Not Cooling
RUNNING BUT NOT BLOWING COLD? START HERE
Dirty air filter The single most common cause of weak airflow and poor cooling — check and clean first, every time
Blocked condenser coils Debris on the rooftop coils restricts heat exchange; remove the shroud and clean gently with a coil brush
Stuck reversing valve Needs 120 VAC to energize the solenoid into cooling mode; try switching between heat and cool a few times if it’s sticking
Thermostat display mode On some units, leaving the display on a screen other than the AC temperature screen silently drops it into fan-only mode
Damaged ceiling gasket A failed foam gasket lets hot attic air bleed into the cooled airstream — check for gaps around the ceiling assembly
Low refrigerant / faulty capacitor Both require a real diagnostic, not a DIY fix
AC Performance Test: Is It Actually Weak?
REPLACE THE FEELING WITH A NUMBER
“It doesn’t feel as cold as it used to” is subjective. This test gives you an actual number to work from.
1. Close doors and windows, run the AC for 15 minutes to let it stabilize before testing
2. Hold a thermometer at the return air grille (where air is pulled in) and record the temperature
3. Hold the same thermometer directly at a supply vent (where cooled air comes out) and record that temperature
4. Subtract the two — a healthy rooftop AC should show an 18–20°F difference between return and supply
5. If the gap is noticeably smaller, check the air filter and rooftop condenser coils first — both are DIY-cleanable and account for most weak-cooling complaints
PRO TIP
If the filter is clean, the coils are clean, and you’re still not seeing 18–20°F of split, that points toward refrigerant, a failing capacitor, or a reversing valve issue — all things worth a real diagnostic rather than more DIY guessing.
Refrigerator: Not Cooling & Error Codes
ABSORPTION VS. COMPRESSOR — DIFFERENT SYSTEMS, DIFFERENT FAILURES
Most Dometic RV refrigerators use an absorption cooling system — a sealed mix of ammonia, hydrogen, and water circulating with no moving parts, powered by propane or electric heat rather than a compressor. That’s fundamentally different from a residential fridge, and it means level parking actually matters: an unlevel RV can stop the absorption cycle from working correctly.
Common not-cooling causes Misplaced or faulty thermistor, damaged door seal, blocked exterior roof/side vents, refrigerant leak (look for yellow staining at the back), or the RV sitting unlevel
Error Code 08 No cooling capacity in AC mode — a manual reset is required after the underlying cause is fixed
Error Code 10 Door has been left open for more than two minutes
CFX3 portable “WARNING 33” Compressor start fail
PRO TIP — THE FULL POWER-DOWN RESET
To properly clear a stored fault, remove all power — unplug from shore power and pull the fridge’s 12V fuse or use the battery disconnect. Walk away for at least 10 minutes so the board’s capacitors fully discharge before restoring power. A quick breaker flip usually isn’t enough to clear it.
Power Awning: Motor & Wind Sensor Issues
ERRATIC BEHAVIOR IS ALMOST ALWAYS THE WIND SENSOR OR THE CONTROL BOX
Both wind sensor lights flashing Indicates a sensor fault or wiring issue, not an actual wind event
Sensor accumulating water Can short internally and cause erratic retraction — try unplugging the sensor to see if normal function returns
Sensor not spinning freely Debris or corrosion can jam the sensor; inspect and clean before assuming it’s electrically dead
No wind sensor lights at all Points to a control board or main fuse issue rather than the sensor itself
Motor unresponsive from the wall switch Check the main fuse and control box wiring for corrosion before condemning the motor
There’s a disable switch on the side of most Dometic awning control boxes that lets you bypass the wind sensor entirely if you need the awning functional while troubleshooting — just remember to re-enable it before storing the awning out unattended.
