Progressive Dynamics, WFCO & Xantrex Troubleshooting Guide

Non-Victron 12V converter and inverter-charger brands — charge stages, common hardware failures, and fault codes for the three most common systems in stock RVs.

SYSTEM VOLTAGE NOTE

This page covers standard 12V DC converter/charger systems, which is what the vast majority of stock RVs from Progressive Dynamics, WFCO, and entry-level Xantrex units ship with. If your coach has been upgraded to a 24V or 48V inverter-charger system (typically Victron), see our Victron Fault Code Guide instead — charge voltages and wiring specs are different.

Progressive Dynamics PD9100/9200 Series

CHARGE WIZARD 4-STAGE LOGIC

Boost mode  14.4V (12V models) — rapid recharge to roughly 90% state of charge
Normal mode  13.6V — standard maintenance charging once battery is mostly full
Storage mode  13.2V — activates after extended idle time to reduce water loss/gassing on lead-acid batteries
Equalize mode  Periodic higher-voltage cycle for flooded lead-acid banks only — do not run on AGM or lithium without confirming compatibility
Reverse polarity protection  Cross-connected battery leads blow the fuses rather than damage the converter — check fuses before assuming the board failed

If the converter is stuck in Boost mode indefinitely, that indicates the Charge Wizard’s stage-sensing logic isn’t detecting a full battery — check battery condition and connections before replacing the converter itself.

WFCO Converters

MOST COMMON STOCK CONVERTER IN KEYSTONE, FOREST RIVER & JAYCO TRAILERS

Dim lights / batteries not holding charge  Classic sign of converter underperformance — start here before assuming the battery is bad
Bulging filter capacitors  The two large black capacitors should be flat-topped — any bulging or outward deformation is a confirmed hardware failure, no further testing needed
Overload/dimming under load  Turn off 12V loads and power-cycle the unit (breaker off 10 seconds) to let it discharge and reset before re-testing
Fan blocked/dirty  Restricted airflow causes thermal shutdown that looks like a dead unit — clean/clear before condemning the converter

WFCO does not publish a consumer LED fault code chart for most models — diagnosis is largely visual/electrical (capacitors, fuses, connections) rather than a blink-code system.

Xantrex Freedom Series Inverter-Chargers

FREEDOM HF/X/XC FAULT CODE BASICS — FOR EXISTING UNITS

E01  Low battery voltage shutdown imminent — check battery status and recharge
E03  Most commonly low battery voltage or a connected load exceeding inverter capacity — check both before deeper diagnostics
First troubleshooting step, always  Power cycle the unit — resolves a meaningful share of reported fault codes on its own
DC input wiring  Inspect for corrosion/looseness at both the DC input terminals and AC output — same failure mode as Victron ripple issues, undersized or loose cable

If E01/E03-style codes persist after confirming battery voltage, cable sizing, and load, and a power cycle doesn’t clear it, that points toward an internal fault or a firmware issue — worth a support call to Xantrex with the exact model and firmware version in hand.

For owners of existing Xantrex units. This section is here to help you troubleshoot the unit you already have. If it’s failed or you’re upgrading, we replace it with a Victron MultiPlus inverter-charger. See the Victron Fault Code Guide or book a remote consult to size the swap.
