Best RV Inverter/Chargers — Buying Guide
An inverter converts your battery bank’s DC power to the AC power your appliances need — and the type, size, and features matter more than the brand name on the box.
Pure sine vs. modified sine
Pure sine wave inverters produce a clean AC waveform nearly identical to shore or grid power — safe for sensitive electronics, medical equipment, and modern appliance motors. Modified sine wave inverters are cheaper but produce a rougher waveform that can cause humming in some devices, reduced efficiency in motors, and outright malfunction in sensitive electronics. For most modern RVs, pure sine is the practical standard, not an upgrade.
Combined inverter/chargers add battery charging from shore power in the same unit — fewer components to install and wire versus separate inverter and converter units.
Sizing to your actual loads
Size for your highest simultaneous load plus the startup surge of motor-driven appliances like a compressor fridge or AC unit — surge draw is often several times the running wattage. Work through the full math in our inverter sizing guide before choosing a unit.
Victron’s inverter/charger line integrates directly with the rest of a Victron-based DC system — worth considering if you’re already building around that ecosystem.
Our Picks
CERTIFIED-INSTALL PICK
Victron MultiPlus 12/3000/120 Inverter/Charger — pure sine wave, remote app monitoring, integrates natively with a Victron-based DC system. Want it installed? We do that →
SMALLER LOADS
Victron Phoenix 12/500 pure sine inverter: a compact Victron inverter for a TV, outlets or a CPAP. For bigger loads, step up to a larger Phoenix or the MultiPlus above, which adds shore charging and a transfer switch.
