Propane Leak Detection & CO Safety Guide
Propane and carbon monoxide are two separate hazards with two separate detectors — both essential in the small, closed volume of an RV interior, and both worth understanding rather than just having installed.
Why placement matters
LP gas is heavier than air, so leak detectors are mounted low, near the floor, where propane accumulates first. Carbon monoxide mixes more evenly with air but tends to rise slightly with warmth, so CO alarms are typically mounted higher, near sleeping areas where exposure during sleep is the real risk. Mounting either detector in the wrong location — or near a vent that disperses the gas before it reaches the sensor — delays the alarm when it matters most.
Combination LP/CO alarms exist, but placement is still a compromise between the two gases’ different behaviors — worth knowing before assuming one unit covers both cases equally well.
What to do when an alarm sounds
For a propane alarm: extinguish any open flame, shut off the gas at the tank, open windows and doors, and get everyone outside before troubleshooting. For a CO alarm: get everyone into fresh air immediately — CO poisoning symptoms can mimic fatigue or nausea and are easy to dismiss until they’re serious.
Test detectors regularly and replace sensors on the manufacturer’s recommended schedule — most LP and CO sensors have a limited service life, typically several years, after which sensitivity degrades even if the alarm still “works” when tested.
