MPPT vs. PWM Charge Controllers

Both keep your panels from overcharging the battery. Only one of them actually gets full value out of your panels. Here’s the difference, in numbers.

When PWM Is Actually Fine

Small, single-panel trickle-charge systems (under ~150W) where the panel’s rated voltage is already close to the battery’s — a PWM controller is cheaper and the efficiency loss barely matters at that scale. Once you’re wiring panels in series to reach a higher voltage, or running any system over roughly 200–300W, MPPT is the one worth paying for.

The Cold-Weather Case for MPPT

Panel voltage actually rises in cold weather. A PWM controller can’t use that extra voltage — it just clips it. An MPPT controller converts that higher voltage into more current at the battery, which means on cold clear days (exactly the days you’re relying on solar hardest) an MPPT system meaningfully outperforms a PWM system with identical panels.
